Same Day Health Centre Report influences CQC Regulatory Assessment

Our visit to Doncaster's Same Day Health Centre highlights the positive experiences for new and returning patients who use the service when they are struggling to access their local GP practice.

Doncaster's Same Day Health Centre is located within Doncaster's City Centre at Cavendish Court. It provides same day appointments for local people if they are unable to access an appointment with their local GP. Patients secure an appointment by contacting NHS 111 or 0300 123 3103. Appointments with doctors, nurses and paramedics are available where they can support with illness and minor injury.

The purpose of our visit was to listen to people's experience of the service as our insights had informed us that GP access in Doncaster is an issue. Health and Social Care Regulator, Care Quality Commission were planning a regulatory assessment and requested our report to support their visit.

Visit findings:

  • 83% of people asked were seen in clinic in less than 3 hours from initial phone call to the Same Day Health Centre
  • One patient said "Very Satisfying. Very Quick"
  • Lack of communication around patient accessibility at triage
  • Dementia Clock/signage not present

Public Recommendations:

  • Make home visits available to those who need them
  • Improvements to the car parking arrangements – car parking is currently shared with the offices within the cavendish court complex.

Healthwatch Doncaster Recommendations:

  • Improve communication between call handler and patient so the patient is aware of all appointment types and health professionals available to them when booking a same day appointment.
  • Implement dementia signs for better navigation around Same Day Health Centre and dementia clocks to further support neurodiverse patients.
